ripgrep for MAC
Free, open-source command-line search tool that finds text in files very fast and respects your .gitignore.
ripgrep Overview
ripgrep is a free, open-source command-line tool that searches the files in a folder for text or a regular expression, very fast. Its command is rg: type rg followed by what you are looking for, and it searches the current folder and everything inside it. By default it skips files listed in your .gitignore, hidden files and binary files, so in a code project you see only the results that matter. ripgrep is made by Andrew Gallant and is dual-licensed under the MIT license and the Unlicense.
ripgrep runs in Terminal on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs and installs with Homebrew (brew install ripgrep) or MacPorts. In benchmarks on its GitHub page it is usually faster than grep, git grep, The Silver Searcher and similar tools, while always supporting Unicode. Many code editors, including Visual Studio Code, use ripgrep for their search.
Key Features
ripgrep works like grep, but is made for searching code.
- Recursive by default: searches the current folder and all folders inside it.
- Automatic filtering: skips .gitignore entries, hidden files and binary files; turn this off with rg -uuu.
- File types: search only some kinds of files, such as rg -tpy for Python, or leave some out.
- Familiar options: context lines, several patterns, colored matches and full Unicode support.
- PCRE2: switch to the PCRE2 regex engine with -P for look-around and back-references.
- Encodings: search UTF-16, Latin-1, Shift_JIS and other text encodings.
- Compressed files: search inside gzip, xz, bzip2, zstd and other compressed files with -z.
- Replacements: rewrite the output based on what matched.

ripgrep FAQ
Is ripgrep free?
Yes. ripgrep is free and open source, dual-licensed under the MIT license and the Unlicense; you can use it under either one.
How do I install ripgrep on a Mac?
Run brew install ripgrep in Terminal if you use Homebrew, or sudo port install ripgrep with MacPorts. Ready-made programs for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs are on its GitHub releases page.
Why is the ripgrep command called rg?
rg is simply ripgrep's short command name. For example, rg TODO searches the current folder and its subfolders for the word TODO.
Why doesn't ripgrep find text in some files?
By default ripgrep skips files listed in .gitignore, .ignore and .rgignore files, hidden files and binary files. Use rg -uuu to search everything.
How do I search only certain file types with ripgrep?
Use -t followed by a type, for example rg -tpy foo for Python files, or -T to leave a type out, such as rg -Tjs foo. rg --type-list shows all known types.
Is ripgrep faster than grep?
In the benchmarks on ripgrep's GitHub page, it is usually faster than grep and similar tools, especially when searching code folders, while always supporting Unicode.
Can ripgrep replace grep completely?
For most searches, yes; ripgrep has most grep features. It is not a drop-in replacement for every script that expects grep's exact behavior, which its FAQ explains.
Can ripgrep search inside compressed files?
Yes. With -z, ripgrep searches files compressed with gzip, bzip2, xz, lz4, lzma, brotli or zstd.
Which code editors use ripgrep?
Several editors use ripgrep for their file search. For example, Visual Studio Code's Find in Files is powered by ripgrep.
Where does the ripgrep download on ripgrep.FULLMAC.app come from?
The download button leads to ripgrep's official GitHub page at https://github.com/BurntSushi/ripgrep, with the install instructions and releases. ripgrep.FULLMAC.app does not change or repackage the tool.

- tmuxtmux is a free, open-source terminal multiplexer. It lets you run several programs in one terminal, split into windows and side-by-side panes, and switch between them with the keyboard. Its most useful trick is sessions: detach from a session and everything in it keeps running, even after you close the terminal or lose an SSH connection, and reattach later exactly where you left off. tmux is developed by Nicholas Marriott and contributors and released under the ISC license.Developer Tools
VigilVigil is a free, open-source native Mac terminal for running coding agents as a team. Instead of copying messages between several agent windows yourself, you give a task to a root manager agent, which can start worker agents and sub-managers of its own. Detail flows down the tree and results roll back up to the manager as summaries, which keeps the manager's context lean. A live node tree shows the whole team at once, and every node keeps the agent's own terminal interface, so you can open any of them and take over directly.Developer Tools
SwitchShuttleSwitchShuttle is a menu bar app for Mac that keeps your most-used terminal commands one click or one keyboard shortcut away. You organize commands into nested submenus, give each one a global hotkey and an emoji icon, and run it from anywhere without first opening a terminal and typing it. It works with iTerm, Terminal, Warp, Alacritty, Hyper and other terminals, and each command can run in the current window, a new tab or a new window.Developer Tools
tty7tty7 is a GPU-rendered terminal written in Rust, built on Zed's gpui and Alacritty's terminal core. A background server owns your shells and panes rather than the window, so you can quit the app and your shells keep running without tmux. After a reboot, the layout, the screen and supported agent conversations come back.Developer Tools
TabbyTabby, formerly called Terminus, is a highly configurable terminal emulator that also works as an SSH, Telnet and serial client. It replaces several tools at once: a local terminal with tabs and split panes, a connection manager for your servers, and a serial terminal for devices such as routers and microcontrollers. Your SSH passwords and keys can be kept in an encrypted vault, files can be transferred over SSH, and the look and features can be changed with themes and plugins. Tabby is developed by Eugene Pankov and runs on Mac, Windows and Linux.Developer Tools
kittykitty is a fast, feature-rich terminal emulator that uses your GPU to draw text, so scrolling and large outputs stay smooth. It has tabs and split windows with several layouts built in, support for true colour, ligatures and emoji, and its own graphics protocol for showing images right inside the terminal. kitty can be controlled from scripts and the command line, and extended with small programs called kittens, for tasks such as SSH with your settings, side-by-side file diffs and Unicode input. kitty is made by Kovid Goyal, the developer of calibre.Developer Tools
